We’re pretty fortunate in the state of Washington. You won’t find many of the terrifying insects you might see in other parts of the country. That being said, we’re not without our creepy bugs. Not all of these insects are exclusive to Washington, but if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, you might come into contact with one here.

  1. Silverfish

Cygnus78/Flickr You might find these bugs in the warm, dark areas of your home. They are nocturnal, wingless and can live for months without eating.

  1. Assassin Bug

Wikipedia Assassin bugs violently stab their prey to death with their beaks. Needless to say, their “bite” is very painful to humans.

  1. Golden Paper Wasp

TJ Gehling/Flickr Wasps are rarely friendly. The golden paper wasp is no exception.

  1. Brown Mantidfly

Colleen P/Flickr This bug looks like a wasp, but their mantid-like legs have a single claw used for capturing their prey.

  1. Buffalo Treehopper

Wikipedia These tiny bugs are harmless, but with their large bison-like heads, they’re definitely creepy.

  1. North American Carpenter Ants

Bob Peterson/Flickr Carpenter ants are the largest ants on the continent. They have huge jaws for shaving timber, eating other insects and biting humans.

  1. The Devil’s Coach Horse

Ken-ichi Ueda/Flickr If you see this black bug, run. It’s got a painful bite and a stinky spray.

  1. Giant Water Bug

Rehman Chughtai/Flickr It’s giant, it’s creepy, it lives in muddy waters, and it will pinch your toes while you’re swimming in a lake.

  1. Stink Bug

Alan Moore/Flickr This bug stinks in more than one way. In addition to its odor, it destroys plants and food crops.

  1. North American Cockroach

Lynette/Flickr Yuck.
