Us Texans basically consider ourselves lone wolves, an island connected to the other states by geography alone. Because of this, we’ve chosen to deviate from the norm and develop our own language complete with plenty of expressions that people from other states simply can’t comprehend. Here are 10 of the most common ones that all of us use on a regular basis:
- “Bless your heart.”
giphy.com It’s basically a friendly Texas way of calling someone an idiot.
- Calling all soft drinks Coke.
Flickr/jeepersmedia No, we don’t mean Coca-Cola. Why can’t everyone speak Texan?
- Saying you can “hang your hat” on something.
Flickr/jon_a_ross If you can hang your hat on something, it’s dependable or reliable.
- Our dogs “wouldn’t bite a biscuit” during thunderstorms.
Flickr/Yuriko In other words, they’re skittish and crazy.
- Someone “fell off the turnip truck.”
Flickr/post406 AKA they’re extremely unprofessional and unsophisticated.
- We get things done “come hell or high water.”
Flickr/gags9999 We Texans are all about perseverance.
- “This ain’t my first rodeo.”
Flickr/nikonlarry We like to channel our inner cowboy when we say we’ve done something many times before.
- We might be “fixin’” dinner, but we’re also “fixin’ to” go to church.
Flickr/ravenellini Don’t ask us why we say it - we just do.
- Cowboys aren’t the only ones who “reckon.”
Flickr/aigle_dore The rest of us Texans do, too.
- Ever had someone tell you you’re “all hat and no cattle?”
Flickr/grassrootsgroundswell I sure hope not, because it means you’re pretentious and/or foolish.
Are these expressions part of your everyday dialogue? What else do we say here in Texas that nobody else understands?
