Whether you’re new here or not, there are somethings you should learn to avoid in West Virginia. Here are a few of them.
- Traffic in Morgantown on game day.
Paula Cristina/Flickr Imagine all these people leaving the stadium and driving home at once. It can get messy. Not to mention the student/fan rioting that has been known to take place.
- Pot holes.
Joshua Davis/Flickr They’re everywhere, especially after harsh winters.
- Swimming in the Kanawha.
Xemmybearx/flickr There’s a reason they call the Kanawha Valley “Chemical Valley.”
- Talking about politics.
Pete Souza, The Obama-Biden Transition Project Like anywhere else, West Virginians have some diverse opinions when it comes to politics, especially presidential politics. It’s best to leave it alone, especially if you don’t know where people stand on the issues you’re discussing.
- Talking about coal.
AlbertHerring It’s as dicey as talking about politics because it IS political.
- Asking how close we are to Richmond.
Virginia Karte / Portion of “The National Atlas of the United States of America. General Reference” We’re not close to Richmond. We’re actually a separate state than Virginia and we have been since 1863. Why is that hard to understand?
- Being in close proximity to someone after you eat ramps.
Dan Heatherly/Flickr They’re delicious so it’s worth it but they ARE going to make you stink.
- Making a West Virginia joke.
Don the UpNorth Memories Guy Harrison/Flickr We can do that because we live here but heaven help the outsider who makes fun of us.
- Karaoke clubs if you don’t wanna hear “Country Roads.”
ABC Television You’re gonna hear it… Probably at open mic night, too. It’s our “Wagon Wheel.”
Do you all agree with this list of things to avoid in West Virginia? What would you add to the list? Let me know in the comments.
