How do you tell apart a West Virginia native from someone who’s just passing through or who lives here but isn’t attached to the state?  One way is by detecting things that West Virginians will never do. Here are somethings that you’ll never catch a West Virginian doing:

  1. Mispronouncing Appalachia.

Jax42 It’s Appa-lah-cha, not Appa-lay-sha.

  1. Driving poorly on winter roads.

Lindley Ashline/ Flickr We know how to drive.

  1. Cheering for Pitt.

Crazypaco Not a chance. Most of us are ‘Eers fans ( or Herd fans, of course).

  1. Taking Uber somewhere.

Alexander Torrenegra We unfortunately can’t because Uber isn’t allowed here. (Thanks, Legislature.)

  1. Driving a Tesla.

Tesla Motors You’re not likely to see a West Virginian drive one of these because our Legislature banned the direct sale of cars, which effectively banned Tesla.

  1. Mispronouncing Kanawha.

OZinOH/Flickr You can always spot a newcomer by the way they say this word.

  1. Badmouthing their state.

Flag map of West Virginia Well…. there may be some of this when we’re joking around, but ultimately we have a lot of love for the mountain state.

  1. Being unpatriotic.

Karmablue/Flickr West Virginians are definitely proud to be Americans.

  1. Standing by and not helping when there’s work to be done.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service/Flickr West Virginians are great people to have around when there’s work to be done, or in a crisis. We know how to work hard and we’re willing to do it.

  1. Leaving and not coming back.

Forest wander We may go away on vacation. Many of us move away for jobs and other opportunities. But this place is always home.

What other things would you add to the list of things you wouldn’t catch us doing? Let me know in the comments!
