Illinois is full of all kinds of treasures, including some unusual ones. Here are 10 unusual spots in Illinois that you need to check out.
- Pyramid Home
Chuck Falzone/Flickr That’s not Egypt, but Wadsworth. The home builder attempted to replicate the pyramids of Egypt. There are tours to see this place–and you’ll definitely want to.
- Hippie Memorial
Ken Bosma/Flickr Head to Arcola for the world’s only memorial to hippies. It is a whopping 60 feet long.
- Piasa Bird
stannate/Flickr Father Marquette described seeing this bizarre bird-like creature (that hasn’t been seen since). A painting commemorating it can be found in Alton.
- The Eternal Indian
Teemu008/Flickr This giant statue sits on a 77 foot bluff overlooking Oregon, Illinois. The strange part about this statue, however, is that not of “Black Hawk,” but is rather an amalgamation of a bunch of different Indians.
- Two Story Outhouse
Jenn/Flickr Why was a double-decker outhouse ever given the green light? Who knows? But you can view it by visiting Gays, Illinois.
- Cache River State Natural Area
Michael/Flickr One visit to this swampy area and you’ll see what we mean. Large cypress trees seem to jut out of the water. It’s pretty incredible and eerie at the same time.
- Abandoned Brach’s Candy Factory
Brendan Riley/Flickr This used to be one of America’s largest confection producers. Now, it is abandoned and crumbling and just kinda creepy.
- Olney
Greg Schechter/Flickr Olney claims to have the most white squirrels. You will see tons of these critters walking around town. Residents are fiercely protective of these squirrels.
- Cave-in-Rock
David Wilson/Flickr This large cave has housed pirates and highwaymen, and you can get up close to the 55-foot-high mouth of this cave by heading to southern Illinois.
- Stickney House
Teemu008/Flickr You’ll notice that this home is strange right away because of its round edges. There are no corners, as the home builder believed that evil spirits lived in corners.
