Ah, tourists. We love them, we really do. They bring in a lot of money for the state and they help spread the word about how great Nebraska is. Plus, isn’t it nice to know that someone who isn’t from here thinks Nebraska is nice enough to spend their vacation in? Or that someone from the other side of the state came over to see how the rest of Nebraska lives? But let’s be honest – sometimes they stick out like a sore thumb.
- They don’t know that there’s a lot to explore if you get off of I-80.

- They’re wearing fresh, clean cowboy boots with their street clothes.
Wikimedia We all know real ranchers don’t own clean boots.
- They’re wearing newly-purchased “Omaha” shirts.
Smash Vintage
- They’re bundled up in 60-degree weather.
flickr/Dana McMahan Aww, isn’t that cute? This is tee shirt weather for us.
- They’re almost incapacitated by the summer humidity.
flickr/Nannydaddy
- They’re shocked to learn (or just won’t believe you) that Nebraska isn’t all flat.
flickr/Kris
- They ask where the Cowboys and Indians are.
flickr/literati And not in a joking way.
- They’re amazed that we have such vibrant cities.
flickr/Overduebook
- They spend far more time looking at things through their phones or cameras than they do looking at things for real.
flickr/Mike Pickard Although to be fair, this also describes most teenagers.
- They’re in complete awe of our amazing sunsets.
flickr/Kelly DeLay Actually, we can’t fault them for that one. Even life-long residents are still floored by them.
How easy is it for you to spot an out-of-towner? What always gives them away to you?
