Around here, we think Florida is pretty cool. There’s plenty of sunshine, water and wildlife to enjoy–and we wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else. Life here is a little different than anywhere else in the country, and there are a few things we do that would baffle people living in other states. We like to celebrate our state and everything that makes it unique, so here are a few weird things only Floridians do:
- Wear flip-flips all year long.
Flickr/Cíntia Regina Just make sure to choose an appropriate fall or winter shade for your toes.
- Put plastic flamingos in their yards.
Flickr/Nick Gray Sometimes people also give them as gifts when someone hits middle age, as you can see here.
- At Christmastime we light up palm trees.
Flickr/ClaraDon Decking the palms is just as much a Christmas tradition as decking the halls.
- And Santa arrives by shrimp boat.
Flickr/Judy Baxter In the small Northwestern Florida town of Apalachicola, at least.
- Grab sweaters as soon as it hits 65 degrees outside.
Flickr/Janine (Though that might not happen this year).
- We have a knack for getting into trees.
Flickr/spaceindian Most kids here grow up surrounded by great climbing trees.
- We understand the deliciousness of boiled peanuts.
Flickr/Jenni Konrad (Trust me, it’s weird to some people.)
- Take any opportunity to party, or dress up like pirates.
Flickr/Ran Allen Or both, as you can see here in the Gasparilla Pirate Festival.
- Find any way possible to enjoy Key lime pie.
Flickr/Deb Nystrom Key lime pie dipped in chocolate, Key lime cookies, Key lime ice cream, Key lime candies, Key lime salsa, Key lime jelly, Key lime hot sauce, and pretty much anything else.
- Build life-size dinosaurs, just because.
Flickr/Bill Couch You can see them on the highway or at Dinosaur World in Plant City.
- We coexist with gators, sharks, snakes, and lots of bugs…by choice.
Flickr/Craig ONeal It’s the price you pay to live in paradise.
Of course, they’re not really weird to us, but what are some other things we do differently in Florida? Please share them with us in the comments below!
