We all love living in West Virginia, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t struggles, too. Tell me if you all can relate to these:
- Avoiding deer in the road while driving.
State Farm/Flickr They seem to come out of nowhere.
- Being from a small town no one outside the state has heard of.
Jimmy Emerson, DVM/Flickr This is why we usually just say the county or region we grew up in.
- Not knowing what kind of weather to expect in March.
Gene/Flickr Let’s just say it’s hard to pick an outfit in spring time.
- With the state’s employment outlook, it can sometimes be a struggle to decide whether to stay in West Virginia or leave.
Kellan/Flickr This can be a hard decision, even though we love our home state.
- Wanting a bloody mary with Sunday brunch but not being able to have it because of some antiquated law.
Erica Firment/Flickr Please, legislators, we want brunch!
- Having to travel to see your favorite musicians (unless you like country or Americana).
Kmeron/Flickr We don’t get many other types of musicians.
- Having too many great places to hike to choose from.
Sarah H/Flickr Out of all our state parks and forest and national forest areas, how do you decide?
- Convincing people that West Virginians wear shoes.
Robert Sheie/Flickr Come to think of it, there are a lot of wrong stereotypes about West Virginians.
- The struggle of driving in the spring time with all the potholes that developed over the winter.
Michael Gil/Flickr Soon it will be time to get your car realigned.
- Wanting to raft the Gauley River but also being scared out of your mind to do it.
Michael Blow/Flickr It looks equally fun and terrifying. Maybe this year will be my year!
- Trying to convince people that West Virginia is its own state.
S. A. Mitchell Jr. We’ve been separate from Virginia since 1863 and people still haven’t grasped it.
What other struggles do West Virginians face? Let me know in the comments.
