We take freedom very seriously in Montana. That being said, there are still a few things you’ll want to avoid should you want to live your happiest life in the Treasure State. These are 11 of them.
- Backwoods camping without experience.
Len Hardy / Flickr Montanans love the great outdoors, and most of us are quite well-versed in survival skills. But there are certain things that require more than loving to camp. Going deep into the woods is one of them.
- The popular hiking trails at Glacier National Park during summer.
Grace Nguyen / alltrails.com If it has a boardwalk or you see it on a flyer, it’s going to be packed from May through August.
- Getting stuck behind cattle, horses or a tractor.
J. Stephen Conn / Flickr Hey, it happens. It’s called a traffic jam. But it’s still pretty annoying.
- Leaving your snow shovel lying in your yard.
Carl Mueller / Flickr If it snows overnight (yes, even in June) you will NEVER find it.
- Road construction.
Mlandroche / Flickr Just kidding. You can’t avoid it. But it’s a great lesson in patience!
- The woods/back roads on opening day of hunting season, unless you are a hunter.
Luke Detwiler / Flickr You might enter a war zone you’re not ready for.
- Subpar campgrounds.
Troy Smith / Flickr This is the most beautiful state in the country. You owe it to yourself to enjoy nature at its finest.
- Questionable looking seafood.
Orin Zebest / Flickr Montana has an abundance of fresh produce and locally raised meat, but our seafood is flown in. If it doesn’t seem fresh, avoid it at all costs, or pay the consequences.
- Beer from out of state.
Taubin / Flickr Support your local breweries. Our beer is the best.
- Driving below the posted speed limit in the left lane of the interstate.
Sean Kimmel / Flickr Never do this in any state, please.
- Speaking negatively about Montana.
Jim Swenson / Flickr Even if you’re not entirely happy here, you’re among the most prideful group of people in the nation. It won’t go over well.
The list of things to avoid in Montana is small, but the list of things to see and do in the Treasure State is vast.
