Here in Virginia, we’ve developed certain behaviors that may seem flat out bizarre to folks from other states. What passes as tradition from our point of view might be strange enough to strike up a conversation with an onlooker. Nevertheless, we don’t plan on changing our habits anytime soon. See if you can relate to any of these 12 things that Virginians do that seem insane to everyone else:
- We wave to folks as we’re driving by, whether we know them or not.
K2D2vaca/flickr This is especially true in small towns. It’s just the Virginian way!
- We could spend hours, even entire days, browsing antique malls.
Virginia Beach Antique Mall/Facebook Virginia has some of the best antique-ing in the country, and it’s an endlessly entertaining activity.
- We serve ham with our brunch.
Tom Kelly/flickr While this is a personal preference, most Virginians can enjoy a delicious slice of ham along with breakfast.
- We have an undying love for Arby’s (or whatever the local chain happens to be).
Jim/flickr Because the Virginia version is always the best!
- We’re always on the lookout for these beautiful, yet unpredictable creatures.
readontheroad/flickr Deer are beautiful creatures, yet they can also dart across the road at any moment.
- We’ll take the backroads on purpose.
Nicolas Raymond/flickr Is anything more beautiful than a scenic drive through rural Virginia?
- We save our old newspapers…

8…for crab pickin’ season!
Susan Smith/flickr The messier, the better. And don’t forget the Old Bay.
- We cherish our out-of-the-ordinary roadside attractions.
Matt Lehrer/flickr What would road trips be without bizarre attractions, anyway?
- We share a little bit of our personalities on our license plates.
Eli Christman/flickr Virginia has the highest volume of vanity plates in America, and we’re proud of it.
- We flock to the grocery store the moment there’s a foreboding weather forecast.
Paul Townsend/flickr We’re on a mission for all the bread, milk, eggs, and water in sight.
- We’re always ready to talk about Virginia’s history.
Tony Fischer/flickr Who can blame us? We’re proud to be from this wonderful, historic state.
