People from away just don’t understand. Mainers have a special way about them and it’s not always clear to people who aren’t from Vacationland. We’ve put together this short and effective list of things to be prepared to explain to people from out of town.

  1. The notion of keeping anything that still might work.

neilbanas / Flickr Even if it hasn’t worked in decades - you never know! Throw it downcellah.

  1. Speaking of which, downcellah is another one.

usnationalarchives / Flickr It means basement. So, if you’re visiting a friend’s grandmother and they send you down there, grab a buddy and head down. It’s usually pretty scary downcellah.

  1. This is not a lake house.

dana_moos / Flickr It’s “camp” and when you’re headed there for the weekend, you’re going “upta camp!” If you want a lake house, try any other state.

  1. We’re not saying it wrong.

pavdw / Flickr There are just fewer “r” sounds here in Maine!

  1. Maine is NOT in Canada.

  1. This is not the apocalypse.

pavdw / Flickr This is actually just a really great plow job! And you’re still going to work and school.

  1. We don’t need a GPS here.

  1. This sight is not to be messed around with.

rekha6 / Flickr Moose are not just “cute” - they can seriously stove up your car. And your face.

  1. Again, speaking of which…

  1. This doesn’t look like clutter to us…

ragingwire / Flickr …it looks like home!

  1. The coast is nice, but inland might be even better.

  1. It’s safe to go North!

auvet / Flickr In fact, some of the most beautiful parts of the state can be found up there!

  1. The various parts of Maine.
