The weather is warm, the birds are chirping, the green buds are appearing on the landscape, and the roads turn to mud. That’s right folks, it’s that time of year again! We all know that everything in life comes at a price and, to live in Vermont, mud season is a necessary evil. But hey, if it was always perfect here, there would be a lot more people living in the 802 and we do like our space! Here are a few things we’ve come to expect when mud season strikes.
- You make sure you have an extra pair of shoes handy.
Flickr/Steven Depolo At any given time one (or both) might look like this.
- You dread sunny days and pray for cold days so the road stays firm.
Flickr/Paul Moody While the sunshine feels great, it turns the roads into mud soup.
- You find everything you lost last fall.
Flickr/Debra That’s where my shovel went!
- Avoid dropping in on people who live on dirt roads.
Flickr/putneypics Sorry, guys. We’ll see you in the summer!
- Regret every bad decision you made in the fall when you didn’t clean up.
Flickr/Chris Ay yup!
- You follow cars of the same height.
Flickr/putneypics If they sink or slip you ‘ll know what to avoid.
- People will go on Vacation.
Flickr/Breezy Baldwin We don’t blame you for wanting a little R&R somewhere else for a bit.
- It’s mud bogging time!
Flickr/James Brooks If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em!
- You’ll get a windshield chip.
Flickr/James Lee It’s inevitable.
- You can finally see the potholes to avoid them.
Flickr/Vilseskogen Well, that’s good!
- Trying to figure out where to store your winter gear.
Flickr/Dan4th Nicholas How did we get so much stuff?
- You wash your car by leaving it out in the rain.
Flickr/waldopepper Professional car washes in mud season are pointless.
- You see the welcome signs of Spring.

Yes we voluntarily live in a state that turns to mud soup for a few weeks every year. Here are 13 ways Vermont is America’s black sheep… and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
