Apparently we do some really strange things here in Texas – we wouldn’t know, of course, because those things are just as normal and routine to us as brushing our teeth. Here are 13 weird traditions you’ll only understand (and possibly hold sacred value to) if you’re from Texas.
- Homecoming mums.
Flickr/mrmuskrat It simply isn’t homecoming without mums - and ones bigger than the girl wearing them, at that.
- High school football on Friday nights.
Flickr/edrost88
- And pro football on TV every Sunday. With beer and pizza, of course.
Flickr/taritm
- Greeting strangers.
Flickr/boston_public_library Wait, you mean there are actually states where people don’t say a passing hello to everyone? It’s true y’all - you won’t find a friendlier state than Texas.
- Flying our flag at the same height as the US flag.
Flickr/biggreymare
- And pledging our allegiance to Texas as well as America in schools.
Flickr/tristanseifert
- Texas shaped everything.
Flickr/huddleston Have you ever seen an Alaska shaped waffle maker? Or tortilla chips that look like California? Nope. I’ve heard there’s even Texas shaped pasta now. Yeah, we’re that cool.
- Breakfast tacos.
Flickr/powerplantop Can you seriously believe these are unheard of anywhere else?
- Fair day.
Flickr/stevenm_61 No other state gets out of school for a day to enjoy the fair. Big Tex doesn’t approve of that.
- Tamales for Christmas.
Flickr/iguana_azul What can we say? Some of our Mexican history has stuck with us. But we aren’t complaining.
- Pulling onto the shoulder to let another car pass.
Flickr/bobex_pics Just another example of good ol’ southern hospitality.
- Tex-Mex (AKA queso.)
Flickr/imelda It isn’t so much a tradition as it is a way of life.
