When you live in Massachusetts, there are some things that just seem to wind up hanging around your home. How many of these do you have somewhere in your house right now?
- A snow shovel. Or eight.
Flickr/Melissa Gutierrez
- A Nantucket basket. If you’re a fancy-pants.
Flickr/Henry Zbyszynski
- A Yankee candle. Because who doesn’t need the kitchen to smell like you’re baking apple pies all year round?
Filckr/Mike Mozart
- Fluff. For the dressing of peanut butter sandwiches, ice cream, and fingers.
Flickr/Ginny
- Sports jerseys in the laundry. Because that stuff gets worn on the regular, not just saved for game day.
Flickr/Joey Newcombe
- Sneakers. Not tennis shoes. Do you even wear sneakers to play tennis? I missed that day in gym class…
Flickr/Carol VanHook
- A cella’. It’s where we store our piles and piles of winter gear and probably a few beat up recliners. Not to mention that elliptical we are definitely going to start using.
Flickr/Lawrence Whittemore
- An embarrassing shot of someone on a rollercoaster at Six Flags New England.
Flickr/MOTT
- “Make Way for Ducklings” because it’s our official state children’s book.
Best Children’s Books
- A Dunkin Donuts coffee cup with the pink and orange straw sticking out.

- A bag of salt with which to season the driveway and front steps to perfection.
Flickr/Chris Campbell
- A few cases of tonic, if you’re in Boston. Otherwise, soda will suffice.
Flickr/Allen
- A bunch of local delivery menus in a folder marked “Snow Day.” Sometimes in the winter, the journey to food starts and ends with a phone call.
Flickr/Tojosan
- Some sort of nautical decoration, because we all at least like to think we’ll make it down to the Cape this summer.
Flickr/Labros
- Real maple syrup. From, you know, maple trees. Not pancake syrup. Nothing against the bottle shaped like a lady, but we’re New Englanders and we know what maple syrup is supposed to taste like.
Flickr/MOTT
- A tub of Ben and Jerry’s. Probably mostly devoured…
