So you’ve just moved here and you’re wondering how long it will be before you’re considered a South Carolinian. Well, there are two sides to that answer. On the one hand, if you’re not born in South Carolina you can never technically be considered a “native.” But there are some things you can do to be considered a South Carolinian anyway.
Here are those things:
- You’ve toured at least one historic plantation.
Flickr/John
- You’ve taken the ferry out to Ft. Sumter National Monument to tour where the Civil War began.
Flickr/Blake Lewis
- You’ve engaged in (and won) a friendly debate over which BBQ is better: South Carolina BBQ or North Carolina BBQ.
Flickr/Frederick Dennstedt
- You’ve visited Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia.
Flickr/Valerie
- You’ve Sucked it up (literally) and eaten an oyster…swallowing without chewing counts.
Flickr/zehmboob87
- You’ve encountered an alligator in the wild - or on a golf course, like this one. Hopefully your encounter isn’t up close like this photo.
Flickr/John Pepp
- To that end, you’ve also eaten an alligator - or at least some Alligator Bites.
Flickr/Alan Teo
- You’ve visited a South Carolina State Park.
Flickr/ Dzmitry (Dima) Parul
- You’ve crossed the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston/Mount Pleasant, either on foot, bike or in your car.
Flickr/nick chapman
- You’ve visited Myrtle Beach during a Bike Week - whether it was on purpose or accidentally.
Flickr/Jim Brickett
- You’ve “gone crabbing” in the Lowcountry.
Flickr/Tonya Lane Rucker
- You’ve attended the South Carolina State Fair in Columbia.
Flickr/d76
- You’ve learned to drink your tea sweet.
Flickr/Lou Murrey
- You’ve picked a team from South Carolina to root for and you’re a dedicated fan.
Flickr/Charamelody
- You’ve been to Columbia and at least laid eyes on the State Capitol.
Flickr/Ron Cogswell
- You’ve learned to shag - or at least tried to shag.
Flickr/Sarah
- You’ve made it to one of South Carolina’s beautiful beaches and dipped your toes in the Atlantic.

If you haven’t done every one of these just yet, never fear – there’s always time to make yourself even more of a South Carolinian.
