There’s a saying that goes, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Northern California is a real gem but look a little closer and you might occasionally discover fool’s gold. Most days. we’re intoxicated by the Mediterranean weather, GMO-free produce, and the hipster coffee shops at every turn, but there’s an ugly side to our part of the state that we don’t like to face.

  1. Traffic here is the pits.

flickr/steven damon While our Southern California sister is much worse, we’re slowly gaining on her. While we understand a carpool lane is helpful, alot of folks here don’t appreciate social engineering until we creep along at a snails pace.

  1. Our education system here gets a BIG thumbs down.

flickr/navy hale keiki school According to an article last summer in the San Francisco Chronicle, we rank 9th WORST when it comes to our education here. That means 41 states do a better job at preparing kids for their future. That’s depressing…

  1. Gas tax? We’re number one!

flickr/mike mozart Our gas tax is the highest in the country. Hand us that first place trophy, America–we’ve earned it.

  1. The Golden Gate toll.

flickr/phil whitehouse May 27, 1937 was the opening date of this golden beauty. The toll was a whopping 50 cents back then. Today? You’ll need to fork out a lot more than that. It’s $7.25 a vehicle and carpool is still $4.25 with THREE people to be eligible…NOT TWO.

  1. Crime is on the rise.

flickr/brandon anderson Crime is on the rise in Sacramento, among other Northern California cities. Oakland ranks in the top 10 of most dangerous cities in the nation. Bummer, Oakland.

  1. We need more water, people.

flickr/steenaire This would be Folsom Lake before our recent rains. As much as we appreciate the rains around here, lately…we need A LOT more. Anyone else amazed that fake turf is making a comeback?

  1. What’s up with the roads?

flickr/_chrisUK Has anyone else been driving along and experienced a falling feeling, only to discover your front axle went into a pothole? Potholes must be the new “in thing” around here. They’re everywhere.

Okay, enough of that. Time to pay attention to the weather. We rock when it comes to weather!
