I have fond childhood memories spending Saturday afternoons going fishing with my Grandma. The fishing lasted only a few hours, but the memories are still with me almost 30 years later.
If you want to make some special memories in SoCal, there’s nothing like spending a day going fishing. Here are some wonderful spots in Southern California where you can catch some fish with the whole family.
- Laguna Niguel Regional Park
flickr/Ashu Shaw You will find bass and catfish here year-round. If you are fishing in the winter, you will also have access to trout.
- Lake Murray

- Santa Margarita River
flickr/Mechanoid Dolly 10 miles north of Fallbrook there is public access for fishing where you will find wild rainbow and brown trout.
- Santa Monica Pier
flickr/Glen Bowman Pick a pier, any pier. A pier makes a great spot for a nearby fishing excursion.
- Jenks Lake in San Bernardino National Forest

Yelp/Lydia O. You can do some fishing right off the pier or off the shore – take your pick.
- Lake Gregory
flickr/Don Graham A picturesque setting to spend a day fishing for trout, catfish and carp. You can buy your bait at the park as there is a tackle shop onsite where you can purchase supplies.
- Stearns Wharf
flickr/Linda Tanner You will find a huge variety of fish at Stearns Wharf, including mackerel, perch and several types of bass. And catching a tiny fish still counts! Pay close attention to the “No Fishing” signs as there are several areas on the wharf where it is off limits.
- Lake Jennings
flickr/Brazilfox Lake Jennings is not only a beautiful place to spend a day, but it’s also considered to be the best place for fresh water fishing in all of San Diego County.
If you’ve never been fishing before, you are missing out. Make sure to experience it at least once, especially here in Southern California, where you really can’t go wrong anywhere you choose to go. If you have been fishing in SoCal before, do you have any favorite spots?
