What scares you? According to most studies and statistics, the fear of heights is the most common phobia. Northern California has lots of folks who love the adrenaline rush of a looking out the window of a tall building or sitting on a cliffside. Does standing on the ledge of a building, mountainside, or rocky trail make you break out in a cold sweat? Then DO NOT look at the following photos. Just don’t do it.

  1. San Francisco

  1. Yosemite

flickr/edward stojakovic Above Yosemite. Waterfalls look like tiny trickles of water running alongside the mountains. Lovely.

  1. Mechanics Institute, San Francisco

flickr/chad k A well-known library and chess club. This winding staircase is located in the financial district. Alfred Hitchcock would approve.

  1. Foresthill Bridge, Auburn

flickr/nick ares 522 feet up above the North Fork of the American River below. This bridge connects the Sierra Nevadas to the amazing city of Auburn.

  1. People’s Creek, Scotts Flatt

flickr/bob white For those who hate the water this could be a terrifying view. But, to most of us this just shouts tranquility. (See what I did there?)

  1. Mount Shasta

flickr/stuart rankin That round white area there…it’s Mount Shasta. Seriously. I’m guessing this is the view a skydiver would have jumping out of a plane. Not sure about you, but this is as close as I plan to get to skydiving.

  1. Coloma

flickr/stuart rankin Look down and beyond the brush to the valley of Coloma below. A hidden treasure of the Sierra Nevadas and a favorite spot to go berry picking this summer.

  1. Fort Winfield Scott, Presidio

flickr/caribb The Presidio is the home to this west coast artillery post. Manned between 1891 and 1942, this spot housed 17 gun batteries. For those not savvy with army-lingo, a battery is usually a distinct area with gun-mounted artillery.

Which of these shots makes you feel a little dizzy? Better yet, where in Northern California do you go to feel like you’re floating on top of the world? Share with us!
