I love North Dakota, and I know many other people here do, too. There’s a ton of great things to like about it, but there can also be little annoyances that grow on you over time. Here are a few of those things I think we can all relate to even if we’re North Dakotans at heart:

  1. When winter just won’t give up even though spring is supposed to be here.

smilla4/Flickr I feel like there should be a rule where after a few days of temperatures over 50 degrees and the grass turning green, snow is no longer allowed. And yet we still get those last couple of snow falls that make us say please, winter, just end already!

  1. The people who are obviously not from North Dakota thinking we all have the thickest Minnesotan accents because they saw a certain movie.

jpellgen/Flickr Even some Minnesotans would be ashamed of that stereotype, but even though the movie was set mostly in our eastern neighbor, it was still called “Fargo,” not “Minneapolis/St. Paul,” so we have to live with it.

  1. And all the other people who assume that because it’s a Dakota state, it has Mt. Rushmore.

J. Stephen Conn/Flickr I’ve lived in North Dakota for years and I’ve never even been to Mt. Rushmore, but if I had a nickle for every time an out-of-stater asked if I go there often because it must be close by, I’d be rich!

  1. When these guys try to turn your home into a winter getaway.

Dan Mullen/Flickr They are actually pretty harmless but I still don’t appreciate them crowding my windows come autumn.

  1. When you try to make your own knoephla soup but it’s just not quite as good as grandma’s.

Jimmy Emerson/Flickr I think a lot of us out there can relate to this one.

  1. When you miss a Bison or Fighting Hawks game and everyone keeps asking you if you saw it the next day.

Wendy Berry/Flickr Asking about it is the opening for most conversations the next day, so this one can be a pain.

  1. As a kid, hearing that the entire neighboring state and most of the surrounding counties canceled school for snow but yours didn’t.

Wes Peck/Flickr Not even a delay? Ughh!

  1. Leaving North Dakota for too long.

Jimmy Emerson/Flickr Because we love our state too much!

What are some things you would add to this list?

Alternatively, here are some reasons why North Dakota is the BEST, even though most of us already knew that.
