There are many, many historic homes in Nebraska that have been well maintained throughout the decades and still stand tall and strong. There are others, however, that have been given over to the destructive hands of time and decay. These homes all have their own stories, but they all seem to have reached the same fate. Who knows if these nine abandoned houses are actually haunted? They all look spooky enough to play host to scores of scary spirits.

This solidly-built stone house sits in a lonely field near Nebraska City, just begging to tell its story. The buzzard flying over it in this shot from 2003 really adds to the sense of loneliness and mystery.

The beautiful Israel Beetison House in Saunders County has a very long history dating back to its construction - by hand with hand-chiseled, local limestone - in 1874. After generations in the Beetison family, the home is now owned by developers and sits empty and alone.

The photographer doesn’t mention where this particular shot was taken in 2011, but it is a familiar rural Nebraska sight: the former farmhouse that now sits empty and forgotten.

This farmhouse on Highway 183 was once probably filled with the happy sounds of a family. Today, it is little more than a refuge for local flora and fauna.

A sweet little home near Beatrice was empty when this photo was taken in 2006, but the land retained its windmill and barn. The home looks like it has been looked after even though no one lives there anymore.

This large derelict home near Fremont looks incredibly desolate sitting empty among the bare trees in the snow.

A ghost town hunter stumbled across this fairly modern abandoned home when looking for Minersville in 2008.

This photo was captured outside of Madrid in 2008. It looks like it was once a comfortable family home.

This formerly cozy home near Beatrice, pictured in 2012, may be missing some windows, doors, and shingles, but it’s still charming.

These lovely old rural homes are a tangible reminder of the fact that time marches on, always leaving behind pieces of our past. These houses may or may not be haunted by spirits, but they are all most definitely inhabited by many years of memories.
