There are rumors out there that North Dakota is nothing but flat fields. Those of us who have actually explored and seen this beautiful state know that that is anything but true! Sure, there may be parts that aren’t very hilly, but there are many awe-inspiring hills and buttes in the Peace Garden State. Whether you want to climb them and take in the view or just admire them from the ground, here is proof that there are some pretty epic landscapes in ND:

  1. It’s hard to top the incredible painted canyons of the badlands found in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It’s easy to see why the former president loved this place so much!

  1. Steep cliffs and hills surround this river in the Pembina Gorge in northern North Dakota. You can see kayakers in the water to get a sense of the scale.

  1. The gorgeous, scenic, gently rolling hills of the Sheyenne River Valley in central North Dakota are quite the sight to behold.

  1. A beautiful array of buttes in layers surrounding Lake Sakakawea in central and western North Dakota. The reflections make them look even more amazing.
