Old, abandoned buildings – weathered by the elements, their rich histories cast away into the wind that continues to break down their infrastructure. With everything that’s happened in our state, you can imagine we have plenty of buildings that have become amazing ruins that take on a whole new kind of beauty. Here are nine of these ruins, and they’re absolutely breathtaking.

  1. Crawford Smith Ranch (Big Bend Ranch State Park)

Flickr/aneyefortexas The ranch has been abandoned since 1942.

  1. St. Dominic’s church and cemetery (D’Hanis)

Flickr/nikonfdslr It’s sad to see a holy place in such a condition. At least that sacred energy has returned to the soil now.

  1. Abandoned ghost town building (Terlingua)

  1. “Outlaw Station” (Glen Rose)

Flickr/texasbackroads This aptly nicknamed abandoned gas station was one of the most popular places to get moonshine during the prohibition.

  1. San Jose Mission (San Antonio)

Flickr/memoriesbymike In mighty beautiful condition for ruins, if you ask me. So much history resides within these walls.

  1. Baylor Female College (Independence)

Flickr/amyashcraft These pillars are all that remains in the former location of Baylor.

  1. Another shot of Mission San Jose (San Antonio)

Flickr/Katie Haugland Such a grand, intricate structure. It’s amazing how little it’s changed over the years.

  1. Abandoned building #2 (Terlingua)

Flickr/captdf This building has an eerie feel to it…maybe because it’s in a town with a population of next to nothing.

  1. Stonehenge II (Ingram)

Flickr/kl_graphics_vision Not exactly ruins…but it’s a replica of ruins, so that counts for something, right? And it’s just too awesome to leave out.

Have you ever seen any ruins in Texas? If so, where? And what’s the history behind the ruin? Let us know in the comments!
