Oklahoma may not have that Hollywood vibe but it does offer some spectacular settings for many great blockbusters. From action thrillers to drama movies, Oklahoma has had the privilege of filming some of the biggest names in the movie industry.

  1. Rain Man: This 1988 movie was filmed in several places around the state. This gas station in Cogar is where Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman stopped to make a phone call.

  1. Where The Red Fern Grows: Made in 1974 and set in the Ozark Mountains, you can see the 77 ft. waterfall that is located in Natural Falls State Park. Every year you can attend the Red Fern Festival in Tahlequah that was inspired by the novel the film was based on.

  1. Elizabethtown: Two locations in Oklahoma were used for this 2005 film: The Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum in OKC and the Cherokee Trading Post and Travel Mart in Calumet.

  1. Twister: It’s no surprise that several Oklahoma locations were used for this tornado thriller. You can visit the Twister Museum in Wakita to see some of the memorabilia used in the film.

  1. August: Osage County: Based off a play by Tulsa-born, Tracy Letts, this 2013 movie was mostly filmed in Bartlesville and Pawhuska. Watch the film and enjoy the scenery of Tenkiller State Park.

  1. The Outsiders: Filmed only in northeastern Oklahoma, this film was based off the novel written by the Oklahoma author, S.E. Hinton. Owasso, Skiatook and Tulsa are featured throughout the film. The Tulsa landmark, The Admiral Twin Drive-In was also a location featured in the movie.
