You tell people you’re from Illinois and everyone has a preconceived notion about the people here. Most of the stereotypes are probably true, not going to lie about that. But here are nine that are NOT true:

  1. All of Illinois is Chicago

Nimesh Madhavan/Flickr Actually, there’s the whole rest of the state…

  1. That people from Illinois are either Sox or Cubs fans

Tony/Flickr Actually, there is a HUGE Cardinals fan base here.

  1. That people from Chicago are sophisticated and people from Southern Illinois are hicks

big swift/Flickr You’ll often find that country sense beats city sense. Mark Twain demonstrated that best.

  1. Chicagoans are rude

Tech Cocktail/Flickr Okay…definitely not saying you never run into rude people, and it’s easy to think people are rude because they’re often in a hurry, but people are still generally very friendly.

  1. That all of Illinois is flat

Roger W/Flickr I’ll be honest with you, riding a bicycle here is fairly easy. But we have our share of hills, especially in the southern parts of the state.

  1. That we feel inferior to New York

Yann Garr/Flickr We’re comfortable doing our own thing and think we have plenty going on here.

  1. That we drive like maniacs

Connie Ma/Flickr Actually, it’s all of you out-of-staters who don’t know our rules.

  1. It’s expensive to live here

Jaysin Trevino/Flickr Sure, there are plenty of places that cost major money, but there are tons of affordable places, too.

  1. That Northern and Southern Illinois don’t agree on anything

infowidget/Flickr We definitely rag on each other, but at the end of the day, we all respect that we’re Illinoisians.
