I consider myself fortunate to be born and raised in the lovely state of South Dakota. The open plains, rolling hills, and natural beauty never cease to amaze me, and it seems that there’s always a new adventure waiting to take on. Nonetheless, there are a some things about South Dakota that just grind my gears. Here are a few things you eventually grow to hate about living in Mount Rushmore State.
- The stereotype that we are all farmers and that South Dakota only consists of corn fields.

We actually have plenty of city and town folk too, so let’s put this misconception to rest.
- When people confuse North Dakota with South Dakota.
Brian Talbot / Flickr Let me repeat myself again: we are two separate states. Is it that hard to grasp?
- When people make fun of us for not having a professional sports team.
Remy Sharp / Flickr Or when people make fun of us at all.
- Having to always worry about hitting deer.
David DeHetre / Flickr Our state is ranked #5 for the greatest risk of crashing into a deer. When you live in South Dakota, you are just always on the lookout.
- Having to scrape your windshield every morning in the freezing cold.
Travis Nep Smith / Flickr To be honest, this is the worst. Bundling up is an absolute must.
- Winter dragging on.
Linda Beaverson / Flickr Our white Christmases are lovely, but the slushy mess that can sometimes last until April just gets a little old.
- Getting stuck behind farm equipment when you’re in a hurry.
BEV Norton / Flickr Then feeling bad for ever being annoyed after the farmer gives you the friendly finger wave.
- When out-of-staters call us boring.
Thomas / Flickr Any place will seem boring if you don’t seek out opportunity. Our state is an adventure lover’s paradise.
- Moving away from South Dakota.
John B. Kalla / Flickr There may be some aspects of South Dakota I would change if I could, but this state will always have my heart. I couldn’t imagine living somewhere else, and I know of many people who regret ever leaving.
What things have you grown the undeniably hate about living in our state? Do any of these resonate with you?
