Virginia’s coast is a pristine stretch of land that defines our state. While Virginia Beach is an incredibly popular summer destination (and rightly so!) there are plenty other stretches of shoreline that most folks don’t know about. One such place is rather secluded and offers another unusual element: wild ponies. A visit to Assateague Island National Seashore is rewarding not only for the natural preserve, but also for the breathtaking beauty.

The beautiful Assateague Island National Seashore is located between Chincoteague Island and Ocean City, Maryland.

Visitors will arrive to find 37 miles of absolutely pristine coastline as well as salt marshes and inland pine forests.

But that’s not all!

Assateauge is perhaps most famously known for its host of beach ponies, 300 or so gorgeous animals that wander the beach.

And while these ponies may interact freely among visitors, it’s best to leave them be and admire from a distance.

Assateague is protected by the National Parks Service, which charges a fee of $8 per vehicle per visit (unless you’ve got an annual pass).

This admission fee is put to hard work to keep the surrounding area pristine and protected.

Unlike more commercial beaches, there are no concession stands at the National Seashore. All the more reason to pack your own picnic – just as long as you’re sure to clean up everything afterwards!
