The reservoir used to be full of life in the form of sunfish, catfish, and bass. However, due to chronic drought, the water supply has dwindled significantly and most of the fish have suffocated. That isn’t what’s turning the water red, though…The horrifying color is caused by a bacteria called Chromatiaceae, which thrive in stagnant water deprived of oxygen. It may be a fairly simple explanation, but one thing’s for sure - I’ll never be getting anywhere near a place that resembles a gruesome murder scene as much as this lake does.
