Hidden behind one of the most well known churches in the country is one of the most beautiful gardens in Washington DC. Designed to be a “Garden for the Ages,” the Bishops’ Garden on the grounds of the National Cathedral is the best secret garden in Washington DC.
The original plan for 59 acres surrounding the Washington Cathedral began in 1907. The famous landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. designed the garden to be a beautiful landscape.

The designers wanted the gardens to match the feeling of the 14th century Gothic cathedral with historical interest and native plants of the area.

The privacy of the garden stems from its design. The garden was meant to be a private garden “out back” of the Bishop’s house.

However, the garden became more public and a larger entrance was built through the Norman Arch at Norman Court.
