Black River State Forest In Wisconsin Has Beautiful Rocks That Are Millions Of Years Old

Located in Black River Forest, north of Tomah but south of Eau Claire, Castle Mounds is a unique rock formation that you just have to check out.

Black River State Forest has more than 68,000 acres to explore.

With lakes and rivers, its gorgeous location is in the west central part of the state.

But really the best part is Castle Mounds. This long and narrow rock formation stands 180 feet above the surrounding area and is composed of Cambrian sandstone about 400 million years old.

The height of the ridge has created two very different forests and ecosystems on either side.

One side is much more dry and has jack pine and oak.

But the other side is more mossy and home to white and red pines with Hill’s oak, white oak, paper birch, red maple, and large-toothed aspen.

The path to a viewing platform is just two miles.
