Middleburg was established in 1787 by American Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel John Leven Powell. He had bought the land from George Washington’s cousin Joseph Chinn and originally called the area “Chinn’s Crossroads” because it was the halfway point between Alexandria and Winchester.
