Alabama is home to many natural wonders, including beautiful waterfalls. Several waterfalls are hidden away in wilderness areas, while others have become popular tourist attractions. One of the tallest and most-visited waterfalls in Alabama is DeSoto Falls, which just so happens to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the South.

DeSoto Falls, located atop Lookout Mountain, is a gorgeous 104-foot waterfall that’s located near the charming town of Mentone. This incredible waterfall forms where the West Fork of the Little River plunges off Lookout Mountain. And even though DeSoto Falls continues to flow year-round, the best time to visit is during the winter months because the water is running high.

DeSoto Falls began as a small pond, which was damned (A. A. Miller Dam) in 1925. The water flows over the dam, creating a beautiful curtain waterfall. Flowing into three more ponds, this waterfall finally drops off Lookout Mountain and into a gorge (pictured above).

According to legend, Native Americans spent a lot of time at DeSoto Falls long before Columbus first set foot in America. And according to another legend, Spanish artifacts from the 1540 expedition of Hernando de Soto, a Spanish explorer and conquistador who led the first European expedition deep into the U.S. territory, were found near the falls. The falls are named after Hernando de Soto (pictured below).

It’s important to note that DeSoto Falls is NOT connected to DeSoto State Park. The falls and park are actually about eight miles from each other. With that being said, you should definitely consider checking out DeSoto State Park after leaving the falls. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, this is the perfect place for you. Kayaking, fishing, hiking, biking and rappelling are just a few of the many outdoor activities offered at this state park.
