New York’s third largest city, Rochester is known for quite a few things. But out of all the things we associate with this great city, our state’s iconic Garbage Plate is what we’ve come to love the most. An unusual dish that’s now been replicated by many others over the years, let us explain why exactly you’ll want to try this legendary meal at least once for yourself.

The local favorite was founded back in 1918 by Alex Tahou, naming the restaurant after his son who would grow up to run the restaurant for his entire life.

So, what exactly does this quirky dish consist of? There are a few variations!

Originally the dish only included hot dogs, beans and home fries and was simply called Hots and Potatoes, but in the late 1950’s the restaurant began to add other items like burgers.

During the 1980s, local college students started the trend of calling the Hot and Potatoes dish a garbage plate. And while the restaurant wasn’t initially fond of the off putting name, it eventually embraced the nickname Rochester’s residents gave it and trademarked Garbage Plate in 1992.

Today residents can walk into Nick Tahou’s and create a dish filled with hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni salad, baked beans, home fries, french fries, hot sauce, onions and mustard. Yes, a hearty meal with bread and butter on the side!
