You don’t have to be a hardcore adventurer to explore one of Oregon’s most amazing caves. Skylight Cave, tucked away near Sisters, is a one of a kind hidden gem with three jaw-dropping natural skylights, that, in the right circumstances, allow light beams to cascade majestically into the dark cavern. Check it out:

To get there, you’ll take highway 20 deep into the countryside (where you may not receive wifi signal). Once you get there, the cave is quite easy to access. After you park, take a short hike following the signs to Skylight Cave.

At the entrance, you’ll climb down a ladder into a sunlit cavern. From here you can explore either side of this beautiful cave.

As you wander through the dark lava tube, you’ll soon stumble upon the three skylights after which the cave is named. If you visit on a clear morning, you’ll be able to see picturesque rays of sunlight filtered through the natural holes in the cave’s ceiling. The prime time to see it is on a sunny day in the morning hours, between roughly 8-10am.

The sight is positively enchanting.

When you go, you’ll want to bring a lantern or headlamp to light your way through the dark areas of the cave. The cave is only open in the summertime, but temperature inside is consistently about 40 degrees, so you’ll want to bring layers.

As always, be careful as you explore and follow the Leave No Trace policy.
