Throughout our beautiful islands, between miles of incredible beaches, you will find absolutely jaw-dropping lava rock-lined coastline. The Hawaiian Islands are chock-full of incredible geological formations, including lava tubes, coastal rock formations, and magnificent tide pools. Combining all three of these lava formations, the Mokolea Lava Pools are easily one of Hawaii’s most incredible – and odd – geological wonders.
Located near Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Preserve on the beautiful Garden Island, these ancient lava pools, inlets, and coves carved into the shoreline by flowing lava are a must-visit.

On days with tall waves, the pools spout water into the air like a blowhole. Otherwise, waves break onto the rocks and spray water onto the cliffs.

The pools are accessible via a three-mile slippery, rocky, and slightly treacherous hike along the coastline from the nearby Kahili Beach, often referred to as Rock Quarry Beach. It is advised that you only visit these beautiful tide pools in the summer months when the surf is gentle, and during low tide.

Though the Mokolea lava tubes may not necessarily be odd, per say, this geological wonder formed from ancient a’a lava flows is full of mystery and enchantment.

Here is your friendly warning about the risks of checking out any of Hawaii’s tide pools when ocean conditions are less than favorable; waves can still crash into these tide pools, and it is advised that you check ocean conditions before you head to any of them. You should also be careful where you step, as the lava rocks can be razor sharp, and absolutely, under no circumstances, should you face your back to the waves, unless you want to be swept out to sea.
