It’s been a long, hot summer for a good portion of Arizona, so you can bet we’re ready to anticipate our cooler (or, in some places, positively frigid) months. If you’re trying to figure out how to prepare for winter in Arizona for 2017 and 2018, we suggest airing out your coat and reading up on some of the predictions from the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac has been a trusty companion to not just farmers but also homesteaders and homeowners since it was founded and first published in 1792. In addition to weather predictions, it has also published recipes, an astronomy calendar, and gardening guides.

So, let’s take a look at those winter predictions! For Arizona in general, the Almanac says we’re going to be looking at a slightly colder, wetter winter than normal.

In most other states, that wouldn’t be such great news but we need all the precipitation we can get!

In central and southern Arizona, we’ll see chilly temperatures for most of the winter and a typical amount of precipitation. Expect it to be wetter (or snowier) at the beginning of 2018.

Northern Arizona will see similar expectations but snow and rain will be above average! Expect that snow to arrive between early December and mid-February.

All of this means be prepared to take a few extra precautions with your plants and make sure you’re stocked up as usual on necessary winter supplies if you live in the snowier regions. We shouldn’t be seeing any blizzards or extreme temperature dips this winter!
