Sure, you’ve been to Antelope Island. But I bet you’ve never seen it like this. Most visitors don’t hike to Frary Peak – it’s a rigorous hike and it will take you hours to complete. Trust me. You’re going to want to make the effort.

To reach the trailhead, drive toward Fielding Garr Ranch and watch for signs. The trailhead is clearly marked.

The hike to the top of the peak and back is 6.6 miles and it’s rated moderate.

Along the way, you’ll likely see plenty of wildlife. Pronghorn are plentiful on the island…

…as are the resident bison. If you encounter a bison on the trail, give him the right-of-way and plenty of room.

The first mile of the hike is pretty steep; it evens out a bit after that. Even so, you’ll want to take plenty of breaks along the way, because the view is pretty amazing.

Toward the peak, the going gets a little rough again, but don’t give up now!

There’s a false summit along the way, and the view is nice, but keep climbing to the real summit. You’ll know you’re there when you see the cairn.

You’ve climbed 2,070 feet and this is your reward - a 360-degree view of the island and the Great Salt Lake.

  • The hike has full sun exposure the entire length of the trail. Bring a hat and sunscreen.
  • Make sure you have plenty of water with you.
  • If your fitness level isn’t the best, take your time. The elevation change is significant.
  • April is one of the best months for this hike – the bugs can be horrific during the summer!
  • If you’re hiking in the summer, you might want mosquito netting, and you’ll definitely need bug spray (though it doesn’t always work on the insects here).
