You might think artist communities something to scoff at, but as anyone living on the north coast near Humboldt or Mendocino counties knows, the quirky little hippy towns of Northern California are definitely one of the more… interesting places in the state. There’s a ton of fun artists communities throughout Northern California, but we get a kick out of the eccentric community of Garberville. Read on to learn why.

This Humboldt County town of about 1,000 people is known for its laid back approach to living, friendly community, and scenic redwood forests.

It is the primary town in the area known as the Mateel Region, consisting of parts of the Mattole and Eel River watersheds in southern Humboldt and northern Mendocino counties.

It’s a pretty quirky place that was named “the marijuana heartland of the U.S.” by BBC News. Don’t be intimidated by its reputation, however.

There’s plenty to see and do. Jump in the Eel River, hike in the redwood forest, stroll the downtown area, eat in tasty health food restaurants… the list goes on and on.

You can even hunt for the legendary Bigfoot, a supposedly mythical creature that frequents these woods. Or, at the very least, just take a hand carved statue of him home with you.

Founded in the 1800s, this area was originally inhabited by the Sinkyone people. It got its name from the postmaster, Jacob C. Garber, who decided to name the town after himself in 1879.

To truly soak up the Garberville experience, visit during Reggae on the River, an annual music festival that takes place each year the first weekend of August.
