There is no other place in the world like this unique tower in South Dakota. Fire watch towers come in generally similar shapes and sizes all over, but this one truly stands out. Today, you can hike up to the tower, and although it isn’t the easiest hike, it is well worth the trip. The view from this place is absolutely spectacular and you won’t regret making the journey.
Taking the trail up to Harney Peak is an experience in itself.

Benches along the way will encourage you up the trail, which is about 3.5 miles long to the summit, more if you take the one of the other optional trails that are a bit more strenuous.

They Harney Peak Fire Watch Tower is made of stone and sits atop one of the highest peaks, almost as if it grew out of the stone of the mountain itself. It was built in 1939.
