Most of us love a good ghost story— with the chills running up and down our arms, and the adrenaline pumping at full-speed throughout our bodies. Many people seek out scary experiences just to feel the rush. If you’re the type of person who loves a good haunting, then you must drive through Ebenezer Swamp in the Gullah territory of Savannah. There are a few different myths and legends surrounding this area, but none of which top the legend of the “Skin Stealers.” Driving down this Georgia swamp road just might give you the thrill of a lifetime—or a nightmare that you’ll never forget.

Legend has it, Ebenezer Swamp is also home to what certain people call “Skin Stealers.”

A “Skin Stealer” is a flesh-taking, demonic entity, said to drain the souls of victims during their sleep, leaving them mentally awake but physically incapacitated.
Flickr josh___dunn Savannah Occult Author Tobias McGriff has interviewed many people who believed to have been visited by “Skin Stealers” before.
“Skin Stealers” appear to be very tall (nearly 8-10ft in size) “shadowy” figures. They appear to hover like a cloud, over their victims, pulling the life out of their body and into their own.

The Ebenezer Swamp had such urban lore surrounding it, that it has become a popular place for paranormal hunters. McGriff warns hunters to be careful, as the “Skin Stealers” don’t just take your skin, but take the essence of who you are as a human. (Yikes.)

Despite it’ haunted history, the swamp became a National Natural Landmark, due to the bevvy of remaining cypress trees.
