There’s something fascinating about seeing a place that is being reclaimed by nature. You wonder about what stories there are behind that place. The power of the elements will continue to weather on these structures for many years to come, but for now they still stand – if only just.
These abandoned buildings were captured by photographer julochka in Charles Mix County, South Dakota. They’ve been abandoned for decades, and what is left behind of them is both slightly creepy, yet beautiful in a way. They’re like time capsules of the past, still holding the forgotten memories of what they once were.

Any kind of weather has slowly beaten down on these structures for years. Paint peels off, roofs collapse, and some places are all but a pile of rubble.

Some items and objects of the last occupants of this place still remain inside. I wonder why they left?

Farms, homes, and sheds are slowly returning back to nature, but they linger on out in the prairie.

It’s hauntingly beautiful in every way, and draws curiosity to what it was once like many years ago…

Abandoned places are endlessly fascinating. It would be interesting to see what these places looked like when they were brand new, and to see who occupied them in their time. The only way we can do that now is through memories, stories, and photographs of the past. Take a look at these South Dakota homes from the state’s earliest days to see some great examples of what some of these might have been like before nature took over.
