The Hawaiian Islands are known for a plethora of phenomenal sweet treats, from Matsumoto’s Shave Ice and ice cream mochi from Bubbie’s to Leonard’s malasadas and haupia pie from Ted’s Bakery. What Hawaii wasn’t known for, however, are their milkshakes… that is, until Volcano Shakes, opened up shop last year. The over-the-top milkshakes served here are surely what your childhood sweet tooth dreams are made of, and if you have yet to visit Volcano Shakes, you’re 100 percent missing out on not only an epic dessert sure to give you a sugar rush – but a unique experience as well.

Described as “an erupting milkshake experience you’ll never forget,” the shakes served here are easily the most decadent dessert you’ll find on the island of Oahu, and if we might add, quite Instagram-worthy as well.

The shop began as a small, counter-service shop in Chinatown, offering milkshakes, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, Italian sodas and coffee. Soon enough, in at attempt to use perishable food items, they started adding food to the top of their milkshakes. They made seasonal milkshakes for a while, and ultimately, Volcano Shakes was born.
