If you live in DC, there’s no doubt you have probably walked by the Brewmaster’s Castle dozens of times but most Washingtonians have never been in to visit the Victorian Castle just south of Dupont Circle. Also known as Heurich House Museum, this hidden Washington DC castle is like a time capsule to the romantic day of the past!
Heurich House was built near the end of the 19th century by Christian Heurich, who went on to open the Christian Heurich Brewing Company.

Christian Heurich died in 1945 but his widow left the house to Washington Historical Society after she passed in 1956 and the organization kept many of the original furnishings and decor intact.

The three floors of the home are open for public tours and you can visit the ornate and beautiful decor, taking a peak at the past.

You may feel like you are in Beauty and the Beast, as you explore the house, taking in the Tiffany chandeliers, 15 carved fireplaces, and hard-carved gilded furniture.

The house looks just as it did when the Heurich’s lived here, including an original C Steinway piano from 1901, which the Heurich children played and in one room you can see family photos and labels from the brewery.

After you have toured the house, you will want to step outside and enjoy the beautiful gardens.

The gardens are open to the public Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm, in case you ever want to pop to relax and enjoy the beauty.

The Heurich House hosts many events that honor the past and the former owner’s occupation. In mid-September every year, they host an Oktoberfest celebration and there is a holiday market every December.
