In Northern Minnesota near Ely you can find plenty of recreation opportunities. The boundary waters are right next door, and there are gorgeous lakes and trails all around. One lake in particular though, has a story that is far more fascinating and bewildering than the others, not to mention an unforgettable waterfall!

First, head towards Dry Falls. The trail is a little steep at times, but overall fairly easy.

You’ll find the overlooks that show the immense space that was once Bass Lake. When the natural gravel dam separating Bass Lake and Low Lake collapsed, Bass lake lost 55 feet of water in just 10 hours, leaving behind 250 acres and two smaller lakes.

Past the lake bed, when you’re close to the waterfall, you’ll find a tall staircase.

You can catch an amazing view from the overlooks or from the bridge over the creek.
