What once served as a railway has since been converted into a beautiful rail-trail with a 12-foot wide asphalt surface.

The name of the trail stems from its purpose as a railway, when passengers would make frequent stops along the way to pick huckleberries.

The line was abandoned in 1967 and the trail, retaining its Huckleberry nickname, was completed by 1998.

Towards the beginning of the trail, there’s a unique underpass which takes hikers under Route 460.

Perhaps the most unique stretch of the trail is the section that crosses over the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Approaching this bridge, hikers can marvel at its unique geometric build and the gorgeous view it provides.

Just outside of Merrimac, the trail also passes through a fascinating park known as the Coal Mining Heritage Park, where hikers can learn more about the former Merrimack Mine.
