In the 1930s, the Bowman family started selling “barnyard milk” from their herd of cows. Today, the operation has grown into a sixth generation ice cream business that also offers one of the best tours you can find in North Carolina. Homeland Creamery doesn’t just own a humble ice cream shop in Julian, but over 200 cows that make some of the best milk, and ice cream, in North Carolina. Even better, you can experience the process firsthand by taking a unique tour.
Homeland Creamery has a natural and sustainable approach. None of their cows are given any hormones which creates a rich, creamy texture to the milk.

The tour starts with a 20-minute hayride around the farm.

You’re also introduced to the ‘simulated’ Miss Betty that teaches you how milk comes from the cow to the grocery store. You’ll also be introduced to the bottle-fed baby calfs - maybe you’ll get to feed one yourself!

When available, you can also visit the milking parlor and see how the cows are milked by machines. At the end of tour, enjoy a six-ounce cup of ice cream.
