Many of us harbor dreams from childhood of galloping off into the sunset on a powerful horse – but for most of us, horseback riding is not a reality. The good news is that it’s a lot easier to bring your dreams to life than you might have guessed. And here in New Hampshire you can take a horseback ride the likes of which your Flatlander friends can’t begin to imagine.

If you’re a skiier, you may have heard of Black Mountain, a smaller slope in Jackson that’s been in operation since 1937 and has become a tradition for many families. But you may not know that in the summer and early fall the mountain is home to an entirely different kind of adventure.

Visit Black Mountain in the summer for an epic horseback experience - ride up the mountain, spend the night in a cabin at the midstation, and ride back down in the morning.

The horses are healthy, happy, and totally beginner-friendly, so your group of up to 5 doesn’t need any experience.

Once you reach the comfortable cabin at the mountain’s midstation, the horses are let loose in a paddock for a night while you explore. Climb a short distance to the summit for fantastic views of Mount Washington and its surroundings, and then come back to the cabin for hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill.

Roast s’mores around a campfire late into the night as the horses graze below you, then enjoy a good nights sleep on the beds in the cabin.

Wake up early to enjoy watching the horses roaming the peaceful, dew-soaked field.

You’ll have a hot breakfast on the deck (complete with coffee, of course!) while the horses are saddled back up for the ride down.

Be sure to take it all in on your way down - the views are incredible, and it’s a rare thing to see them from between a horse’s ears.

Black Mountain’s stables also offer one-hour horseback rides if you’re not up for an overnight, as well as pony rides for a kids. For more information and to plan your trip, visit their website.
