Oklahoma is home to many enchanting places, and some of them look like they came straight out of a fairy tale. Of course, not every fairy tale is romantic…some are scary. This little spot in the Sooner State is a little bit of both.

Lake Jed Johnson is located in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in the southwest part of the state.

This absolutely enchanting tower sits on the banks of the lake.

On a sunny day, the tower looks like part of a castle in a beautiful kingdom. You’d almost expect to see Rapunzel letting down her hair for her prince here. The wildflowers in the spring lend even more beauty to this view.

But on a stormy day, the tower takes on a more sinister demeanor. Perhaps this castle is the evil lair of Sleeping Beauty’s evil stepmother?

The tower does have a troubling myth surrounding it. Supposedly, it was closed off to the public years ago because of multiple suicide attempts. Some visitors claim to hear footsteps ascending the stone steps after dark, and a woman’s scream.

The 60-foot-tall observation tower at Lake Jed Johnson was built in 1941 by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
