When people think of the best lakes to visit in North Dakota, places like Devils Lake or Lake Sakakawea come to mind. This state is full of so many other lakes that deserve just as much recognition, especially now that summer is nearly here. One of these lakes is actually just on the other side of Sakakawea and is a beautiful alternative that will become your new favorite. Here’s why:
Lake Audubon is near the town of Coleharbor, North Dakota and is a huge lake right next to Lake Sakakawea.

It is full of many small islands that hundreds of animals call home, making this place one of the best spots for wildlife photography and viewing.

The lake is mostly surrounded by the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge.

As mentioned, Audubon is best known for the wildlife viewing. There are many spots around the refuge where you can take a look through binoculars or stand on viewing platforms to see the vast waters and surrounding prairie wetlands.

Many familiar North Dakota birds as well as more rare and unusual birds live here. This place is definitely a bird hunter’s paradise, as they do allow hunting within the refuge.

There are plenty of trails, both on foot or in a car, you can take around Lake Audubon. During certain times of year these become full of flowers and lush green grass that showcase the beauty of the prairie.
