Southern Utah is just full of quaint little towns, but there’s one in particular that’s kind of quirky. Take a look at La Verkin.
If you’ve ever driven to Zion National Park, it’s likely that you’ve driven right through LaVerkin.

It’s located at the junction of Utah State Route 17 and State Route 9.

The city, which has around 4,000 residents, sits on a bluff overlooking the Virgin River. No one is entirely sure where the city’s name came from. Some say it’s a mis-pronunciation of “The Virgin,” referring to the Virgin River. Others say it’s a mangled translation of “beaver skin.”

In 2001, LaVerkin briefly gained national notoriety when it voted to become a “United Nations Free Zone.”

That controversy died down more than a decade ago, and now it’s just a pretty little town with a great sense of community pride and spirit.

These folks know how to have fun! The city will host its Summer Water Day at Wanlass City Park on June 2nd from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. People here don’t just play in the water - they have a foam machine for added fun!

This vibrant little community even gets kids involved in service. The Youth City Council is a great way for kids to learn about their local government and serve their fellow citizens.

The LaVerkin Police Department does a great job of keeping the community safe. In fact, last year the city was named as one of Utah’s safest.
