Utah has no shortage of Mexican restaurants. Some serve up incredible, authentic food; others serve up a decent version of Americanized fare, and some miss the mark completely. The most popular Mexican restaurant in the Beehive State, according to review sites like Yelp and Trip Advisor, is Red Iguana, which I featured last summer.
I wanted to figure out what restaurant offered the best tacos in the state. Unfortunately, with hundreds of restaurants specializing in tacos, there was no way that I could test them all (though I did test out a couple dozen – including the winner). Ultimately, I relied on the opinions of hundreds of Utah taco lovers’ reviews. Here’s the winner.
Lone Star Taqueria is the most-reviewed taco restaurant in the state, with 580 reviews and 4.5 stars on Yelp. It also has 206 reviews on TripAdvisor with 4.5 stars, and 572 reviews on Google with 4.5 stars. There’s no doubt about it - Utahns love Lone Star Taqueria.

It’s located at 2265 E. Fort Union Boulevard in the Cottonwood Heights area of Salt Lake City. You can’t miss it - just look for the sticker and paint-covered shark car out front!

Be prepared for a wait. When you serve the best tacos in the state, you’re gonna have a line out the door. The wait is well worth it, I promise.

When it’s time to order, the big decision is what kind of tacos to get. Everything on the menu is delicious, but the fish tacos are particularly good.

If you’re not into fish, that’s ok. Lone Star has 10 different options for filling your tacos. The shredded beef tacos are seasoned perfectly, and the beef is tender and delicious.

You’ll also love the carne asada, pollo asado and machaca filling (egg w/pico de gallo). The prices here are as great as the tacos! Get two tacos for $2.85 ($3.69 for fish).

You don’t want to miss out on the fresh guacamole here.

Pair it with some homemade tortilla chips. They’re thick, salty and fresh.

Tacos are served with a creamy jalapeño cilantro mayo that is seriously addicting. You can buy a 1/2 pint, pint, or quart of this stuff to take home. In fact, you can get all their meat, tortillas, chips, guacamole and sauces in large quantities so you can make your own incredible tacos at home.

When the weather’s nice, especially in the evening, the patio dining is perfect.
